I hope it finds you smiling again...

...until never begins, until forever ends.

This has been, for lack of a better description, a freaking weird year. I don't want to say "bad," because it was scattered with little hints of out-of-this-world-amazing, and what's the use in grading your life, anyway? It is what it is. I am as lucky as I am unlucky, and as resilient as I am hopeless. My entire life has been equal parts extraordinary beauty and tragedy, with a period of lulls between. If it was anything but, I might be an entirely different girl. Despite my pitfalls and bouts of self-deprecation, I am usually certain of one thing: I like the girl I am. I am flawed; I am absolutely out of my mind sometimes. I make questionable life choices in moments of sheer stubbornness and over-analyze everything in my path, no matter how simplistic it may be. My head is in the clouds, but my feet have a difficult time doing much more than holding steady. In addition to all of that crazy I just introduced you to, I'm also intelligent, driven, passionate, mildly talented and a barrel of freakin' teddy bears and candy.

In short, I am just one big mess of a girl. Wouldn't my life be an absolute bore if I wasn't?

I've done this before, but I have a whole throng of new readers. Therefore, here are some new facts about me:

- I enjoy the act of falling in love so much more than being. It's dynamic. Frustrating, exciting, nauseating. It's the comfort that comes afterward that most people crave, but I miss the butterflies and uncertainty.

- I make a great deal of my decisions based on two things: logic and cowardice. Sometimes I have a hard time telling the difference.

- I hate feeling vulnerable. I don't know anyone who likes it, but I really, really hate it. That being said, I apparently have no problem sharing personal matters with the internet world. How's that for a paradox?

- My favorite Smashing Pumpkins song is Mayonaise. It's probably my favorite song from the 90s, period.

- I have been in love more than once. Each time has been a completely different feeling.

- I have also been in love with more than one person at once. Judge away.

- I have a huge crush on Mark Ballas from Dancing With the Stars. Swoon.

- My first "date" was half-blind. I had no idea he didn't know me; my friend left that part out. He basically ignored me the whole night, and eventually ran away - literally. I didn't see him again until a year or two later. When we made eye contact, he jogged away...again. What an odd guy!

- I'm honest to a fault. And yes, I consider it a fault.

- It's Saturday night and I'm updating my blog - and simultaneously making Tessa's dress for her 8th grade dance.

- I bawl every time I see the Desmond/Penny scene in Lost ("The Constant"). I have watched it a dozen times and I cry every. single. time.

- My prom date was my gay best friend. He talked me out of wearing jeans underneath my dress. I was a weird girl.

- I want to have this girl's outlook on life. I can do anything good!

- My favorite driving song is Whitesnake's "Here I Go Again" - such a good song to drive to! Tawny Kitaen had all the moves back then.

- My first rat's name was Splinter. She (yes, she) was fancy, but not a master of martial arts.

- Mad Girl's Love Song is one of my favorite poems.

- Fresh orange blossoms are one of my favorite scents. I'm a Florida girl, what can I say?

I would love to get to know any of you who are willing to participate. Tell me some random things about you - your strengths, weaknesses, interests - whatever strikes your fancy.

Love love,
Keiko Lynn

Rainbow Brite

I completely forgot to post these pictures. Tessa Marie colored her hair; little Roxy Mae followed suit. I know there are a lot of nay-sayers who are wagging their fingers right now, but I think it's important to let kids express themselves outwardly (within reason). It's just hair, it washes out. There will be a time when they have a stringent dress code to adhere to, and their chosen careers might not allow brightly colored hair. Maybe Roxy got a bit of a head start, but there's no time like your youth.

As a matter of fact, I was a member of the blue hair club when I was a teenager (as well as bright red and purple) - and I turned out alright. My sisters and I have been lucky to have a mom who gave us creative freedom and embraced our innocent phases (the less innocent were dealt with in a proper manner). It only makes sense that Amanda has chosen the same parental role. I think Roxy's color has since washed out, but I rather enjoyed my little candy land girls' rainbow hair.

Love love and candy colored tresses,

Keiko Lynn

Edit: When I was coloring Tessa's hair, a family friend was in the other room telling Tessa's dad that she is probably "trying to find herself." When they called her into the room, she yelled, "Hold on! I'm trying to find myself, give me a minute!" I love her<3

My trophies are the scars that will never heal.

Outfit Details:
dress - H&M, but I got it at Beacon's
bow sash - Postlapsaria, custom and made to order (available very soon)
tights - borrowed from Kim
Blimeys - courtesy of Seychelles

Ever since Out of the Fierce Parade came out (The Velvet Teen), I have imagined The Prize Fighter as my theme song. You know, if my life had opening credits. I just asked my friend Ilia what his theme song was - he decided on Exogenesis Part 1, by Muse. Epic.

What's your theme song?

Sex and the City 2

Christine, Jordana and Jessica already updated their blogs with photos from the event, but here I am, a day late and a dollar short. Check their blogs for more photos, because I also forgot to bring my camera. Worst blogger ever!

Tuesday night, we lucky gals were invited to a pre-screening of Sex and the City 2, hosted by HP. I have said this before - I've always been an Apple girl (since age 4 - true story), but HP sure knows how to put on a great event. It also doesn't hurt that they have beautiful Vivienne Tam edition notebooks (or digital clutches, as they call them). I did feel like I was cheating on my MacBook Pro, but I think it understands.

After some fun dress up photos, we squeezed into a limo and headed to the Paris Theatre, then to Bergdorf Goodman for the after party. I thoroughly enjoyed the movie. It's a feel good, laugh out loud with your girlfriends kind of movie, best enjoyed with a light heart and a bucket of popcorn. I relate most of my life to episodes of SATC and Seinfeld (maybe a little bit of Arrested Development), so I might be biased. After our girls night out, Big came by with his driver and picked me up, and we headed home to our amazing apartment with the huge closet full of tons of shoes and designer clothing.

Just kidding. I walked to the N train and took it to Park Slope, where Bobby, Kim and the critters awaited. It's no Sex and the City, but it's home:)

Outfit Details:
sequin cardigan: Fred Flare sample sale, $10
Fickle Fancy fringe top: self made, Postlapsaria
leather skirt: thrifted, hemmed
tights: Target
sunglasses: Ray-Bans, courtesy of Lucky Magazine

Love love and Carrie Bradshaw,
Keiko Lynn

p.s. Which SATC character can you most relate to? I think I'm a mix of Carrie and Charlotte. I've made a lot of questionable choices in romance, love to write, and love fashion like Carrie. But I'm a little bit of a prude, like Charlotte.

Tippy Toes

Though a nice change for my pigeon toed feeties, it's almost like I've forgotten how to wear flats. I find myself standing on my tippy toes every now and then.

flats: courtesy of BC Footwear
vintage bag: gift from my mom's best friend, Dawn
vintage rings and necklace: gifts from my mom

Remember Me, Fondly

Outfit Details:
white shirt: H&M
sequin skirt: reconstructed from a thrifted dress
belt: thrifted, or maybe it's from my mom
shoes: Calvin Klein, from Beacon's Closet
bag: courtesy of Coach

I'm rather happy that I salvaged this skirt from a dowdy old dress; it has long since been one of my favorites. I'm not really one for big costume changes (probably because I'm not really one for fabulous outings), so I will wear my beads and sequins whether it's day or night. In this case, I dressed it down - if you can call it that - with a plain white t-shirt and minimal accessories. I'll just call that a happy accident, since we all know I'm scarcely a master of accessorizing, anyway. Except when it comes to bruises. I am so good at pairing my outfits with bruises.

A few people have asked about my shoes, in person. You may or may not have noticed the faded white marks on my shoes, which are deliberately kept in place. In our last days together, Rowdy (my horse) and I did many fluid treatments, and I gave him countless doses of various medicines. Whenever he gestured to his stomach (which usually indicates colic), I would give him a dose of Milk of Magnesia, of which several drops would end up all over my shoes. I'm certain it's macabre by most standards, but for now, I still can't bear to wash them off. I have a tendency to hold onto the strangest things. I just don't want to forget.

Love love,
Keiko Lynn

Minxy Little Thing

My little manicure pays homage to two great blogging ladies, Greta Guide and Wendy Brandes, the queen of Minx manicures. See how the ring finger's nail is different? That is lovely Greta's trademark. It was a coincidence that they did them that way (it was a time issue), but shhh...I've actually copied her nail trend before.

This is only my second experience with Minx (I had a full set a year or so ago), but I think they are so much fun!

(p.s. Minx are little decals that are shaped and applied to your nails with heat)

Happy Feet

I know you guys are used to seeing me in ankle breakers, but I have been living in these all week. They are like pillows for your feet. Darlingtonia, how do you do it? My troubled tooters (sounds like's what Tessa used to call them) thank you, kindly.

Once I'm not sick - and believe me, I'm getting there! - I'm sure I'll revert to my usual heels. But for now, and at least one day a week from now on, I'm going to treat my maltreated toes to a cushiony pair of flats. I guess I forgot what comfort feels like.

My mom will be pleased. But no, I still can't walk with my feet straight.

Tiger Lily Moccasins: courtesy of Darlingtonia Moccasin Company

Love love and shoes like slippers,
Keiko Lynn

p.s. The style I'm wearing can be found here, but they come in many colors and styles. You can get the same ones, though, and we can be twins.

Living On The Edge

First things first: can anyone tell me why my camera (nikon d50) is doing that (the black bar in the bottom photo)? There is tremendous light fallout. When I have the camera horizontal, it's on the bottom. When I have it vertical, it moves with the camera (so it usually makes the right side dark). It does it with both of my lenses, so it has to be the camera. It doesn't do it all the time but sometimes it ruins the whole photograph. It has been happening more and more often. I can't figure it out!

Do you guys like my bruises and Hello Kitty bandaids? I like to think my bruised up legs make me look super tough, but really I'm just clumsy. I think everyone else knows the truth, as well. Either way, the cute bow really balances the toughness of my battle scars. My good friend Samara (who just finished law school...yay!) bought me this adorable bow belt last week, and got herself a matching purple one. We decided to be awesome/lame and wear them at the same time for breakfast. Unfortunately, I didn't have my camera with me - otherwise I would have gotten pictures of us being twins. Maybe now that she has some downtime (j/ exam time!), we can plan another matching day.

I would say "Wish Samara luck on her bar exam!" - but she really doesn't need it. At breakfast, she was telling me how "over law school" she was. She said, "I don't even care anymore. Give me a B and call it a day."

"Oooh, what a rebel," I said. "I can just hear Aerosmith's 'Living On The Edge' in my head right now."

Outfit Details:
blazer - thrifted
t-shirt - H&M ($4.95! I should have bought more.)
denim shorts - thrifted
heels - Calvin Klein, from Beacon's Closet
bow belt - Anthropologie, gift from Samara

You are the best thing.

handmade dress - Postlapsaria

There's so much more to life than fashion and beauty - but it's the pretty packaging that makes life's shortcomings a little more bearable. When I allow myself to laze around, drawn and weary in last night's pajamas, everything feels so heavy. A shower, nice outfit and a little bit of makeup is a physical pick-me-up that in turn directly affects my mood. I'm the first to admit that a great deal of narcissism and self-indulgence goes into maintaining a personal style blog. I could just as easily snap dressform photographs of my daily outfits, but instead I choose to wear them and model them in my own environment. It's an extra dose of that same pick-me-up I mentioned before - and unlike a glimpse in the mirror, I'm able to choose exactly which representation to put on display (let's just be honest about that).

I guess my blog has become mostly about style, but I want to maintain the personal aspect as well. Whether or not the smoke and mirrors enhance my own mood, there is still so much more beneath the surface and behind the scenes: my friends and family, love and laughter. Heartache, anecdotes and random musings. I enjoy sharing little pieces of my life with you, and receiving your own stories (and pictures!) in return.

Reading your comments and feedback (whether full of praise or criticism) is encouraging; it gives me a sense of relevance even on the most humdrum of days. I don't always have time to respond to every single comment, since I still maintain a full time career of being an old lady who is attached to her sewing machine. However, I want you all to know how much your presence (and readership) is appreciated. The support I receive on a daily basis is nothing short of incredible. This blog would just be a personal diary, if not for my audience. That is never lost on me.

Love love and forever gratitude,

Keiko Lynn
