Project Restyle

I was so honored when Elsie and Rachel asked me to be a part of Project ReStyle. The challenge was to take something old and unusable (or just plain ugly) and make it into something new, and I had just the dress in mind! I bought this ugly, matronly dress at a thrift store because I liked the details and saw some potential beneath the shoulder pads and sporadic rust stains at the top. With a few alterations, I made it into a more wearable trapeze mini that fits right into my closet. I'm pretty happy with the results, and plan on salvaging a lot more of my old clothes in a similar way. Thank you for the inspiration, Rachel and Elsie!

To see more of what I did to transform this dress, check out my Project ReStyle post, on A Beautiful Mess.

lace top - H&M

shorts - Urban Outfitters

grey oxfords - courtesy of Ruche
belt - thrifted

Remember how I went on and on about how fun it is to stay up all night? Well, it's not fun anymore. Apologies for looking like a miserable being in the pictures; I am sleepy sleepy. I can't remember the last time I had a night of sleep; I have just been catching a couple hours here and there. Today, I spent a solid few hours thinking it was still Monday. Everything feels like one very long, drawn out day. I'm really looking forward to getting back on a [somewhat] normal schedule, once I am all caught up with work. I think I might have taken on too many projects and too many orders. My hand is healing pretty nicely, but I'm still having issues using scissors. Everything takes three times as long!

Enough of my whining - having too much work is a good problem to have. Plus, a family friend just rescheduled our dinner date, and that means I don't have to change out of my shorts and knee socks and into jeans and a snuggie. What will I do with this newfound free time? By golly, I think I might take a nap.

Those Little Ordinary Things

As you can see, Vester is thrilled with this kitty hug.

Miku doesn't like when all of the attention isn't on her, so she does everything she can to shift focus her way.

Outfit Details:
vintage dress - Fellsmere Inn
tights - courtesy of Accessorize
Dany platforms - courtesy of Jessica Simpson Collection

I have had this dress for years (at least five or six), but this is only my third time wearing it. I have a tendency to completely forget about certain items in my closet and instead, get in a routine of wearing the same things over and over again. This dress has become a victim of both tendencies, since I didn't wear it for years but have now worn it three times in less than a month. The first time I wore this dress, which was only a few weeks ago, I was in Florida and didn't have a long enough slip on hand. Though completely opaque, the fabric is a little clingy and it absolutely requires a slip unless you are okay with everyone knowing exactly what your behind looks like. Let's just say that my mom and Amanda spent most of the day laughing at me while I tried to cover my butt with my [thankfully large] purse.

Lesson learned.

Makeup Monday: Red Lips

By popular demand, I did a mini tutorial on how to achieve a bold red lip. It may sound silly to have a tutorial on how to apply lipstick - but when it comes to dark, bright or opaque colors, applying straight from the tube is not the best option. That is, unless you a) are fine with looking like a clown or b) have amazing precision. Both of those are entirely possible but for the rest of us, it takes a few more steps to achieve a perfect red lip. For step by step instructions, continue reading after the jump.

p.s. If you want to try the winged liner you see here, follow my previous tutorial.

Just a couple of sillies in the photo booth at Bobby's work party. Any employer who hires a magician, ladies on stilts and has a photo booth for their employee party is okay in my book.

p.s. It looks like I'm balding, but I just had a serious case of bad hair.

This is me in yesterday's Yesterday's clothes, yesterday's hair and makeup (with a little touch up, of course). I had the intention of going to bed early, failed miserably and instead, stayed up all night. I got some sewing done, did the dishes and vacuumed the floors, listened to some party music and generally had an awesome night. I'm not being sarcastic - I love staying up all night. I know it's not a good thing to do and I don't do it often anymore, but skipping sleep and having a full day ahead of me is one of my guilty pleasures.

When I was in high school and college, I used to pull all-nighters all the time because I thought that's what young people were supposed to do (or maybe I just felt like it). Of course, it's a lot more fun when you're on a midnight adventure that lasts through sunrise and you end up on a beach or in another city. This had nothing of that sort - but you better believe that if I had a car of my own, I would already be outta here on a road trip with little Miku in tow. Instead, I'm just going to take a shower and put on some new clothes, get a little more work done and then get the heck out of the apartment for awhile. Party of Helicopters' Please Believe It (old but still the best) is today's official soundtrack and I'm set on having a good day.

p.s. Did you notice that Miku has been working her way into all of my indoor pictures? You lucky bastards.

panda panda panda

I haven't even photographed today's outfit yet, but since I'm backing up my hard drive because I have to bring my computer in again, here is a picture from last year (so...not that long ago). Filler, I know - but I hate that I've been leaving the blog empty so often. Besides, this photograph is featuring two of my favorite things: pandas and bright pink lipstick.

As long as I don't throw my computer out the window and/or it doesn't die on me again, I will be back to the regular posts in the morning.

p.s. The lipstick is MAC's Girl About Town.

As I mentioned before, Bobby and I haven't done a ton of decorating in our current apartment, since we are planning on eventually moving to a bigger space. We did our best to make it feel like a home, albeit a transitional one, which entailed displaying anything of sentimental or familial value. Our guest room is a hodgepodge of framed painting and pictures that were gathered from my mom's shop, along with some old trunks and flea market finds. Since I made our room aqua and white and the office a girlie ballerina pink, Bobby had free reign over the guest room. The bottom trunk is full of fabric I'm not currently using (usually season specific) and the top is full of linens. On the other side of the room is an old wooden wardrobe and stacks of vintage suitcases, and we'll soon have a giant cat condo to appease Kitty Boos, who is sorely missing the great heights of Kim's old bed. While Kim was staying with us, she had a full sized loft bed, which we have since disassembled and will probably replace with a tiny twin. Sorry, BooBear!

It's cold and snow's actually on the ground

It's just a snow fall of snow balls, evidence of the winter. And I can feel my hands again. We're almost home.

Outfit Details:
grey coat - courtesy of Asian iCandy
MNG by Mango cardigan - JC Penney, from a gift card I won
ModCloth dress - from a dress swap with Kim
tights - from my mom
lace up boots - courtesy of Wanted (order a size down - these run large)
scarf - Forever 21 men's section (borrowed from Bobby)
madison satchel - courtesy of Coach
Miku - from planet pretty princess

I finally got around to taking an outfit photo, which is sadly a blogging landmark for this week of no hot water. Without a proper shower I look somewhat like a troll doll/gremlin hybrid that doesn't deserve documentation. None of this bird bath, boiled water and washcloth crap. I need to shower in order to function, let alone look remotely alive. The hot water is back on and in result, I'm in much better spirits.

Being the big baby that I am, I still wasn't willing to stay outside longer than what it takes for me to walk to the train - so I took pictures inside. I would actually prefer to take all of my winter photos from the comfort of a heated interior, but I live in a tiny, dimly lit place and my only lens with a wide enough aperture for scant light is a 50mm (which means it's pretty useless for full length photos in a shallow space). I just ordered a 35mm f/1.8, so hopefully that will help, because I'm sure you don't want to hear me complaining about how goshdarn cold it is. Especially since most of you already know how cold it is and don't need a reminder. Except Florida, which in a really smug "eff you" move to the rest of the United States, was the only state without snow this week. My grandma had the nerve to mention how warm it was in Coral Springs. What a jerk.

I don't know why I'm complaining (I guess I'm just being a little brat) - I love snow. If it's going to be cold, we should at least be granted a snowy blanket of magic. It really hasn't gotten old for me yet. I, along with my old roommate Lane, was well into my twenties before I ever even saw snow. She called me outside to bask in its magnificence; we were like little kids that just saw a real live unicorn. Save for our lookalike Perlino Paso Fino, Diablo, and the unicorn/dog hybrid Miku that you see before your very eyes, I've never actually seen a real unicorn. It's too bad. I think I would like that very much.
