rock ballad

Outfit Details:
hat - Gap
leather jacket - c/o Coach (old)
Rumi dress in broken glass print - borrowed from Rebecca Minkoff
DVF Opal platforms - c/o DVF
Rebecca Minkoff Mini Mac - c/o Rebecca Minkoff
bracelets - vintage and Carol Marie bangle
vintage belt - Brooklyn Flea
glasses - Ray-Ban
lipstick - MAC Pro Longwear Lip Creme Unlimited

I borrowed this dress from Rebecca Minkoff for my trip to LA. I originally intended to wear it to the People's Choice Awards, but ended up wearing it in the CVS Beauty Club segment, instead, and didn't get a chance to photograph it. I took advantage of one of those strangely mild winter days in New York and recreated the outfit (yeah, I'm lame like that but also okay with it). Only, I realized that there's a reason I don't go bare legged in winter, and it isn't just because it's cold. It's because winter legs are horribly unattractive - dry, blotchy and a different kind of pale. But still, I love this dress and feel a little more confident in it than usual. It's just one of those dresses. Or maybe it's the fact that it blows in the breeze and makes every entrance look like it could be part of an 80s rock ballad video. Yeah, that's probably (definitely) it.

My schedule has been somewhat hectic and unpredictable since Kitty Boos got sick and I'm playing cat nurse, so here's a little preview of the post I'll be putting up later today.

If you don't follow me on twitter, you're probably wondering what I'm talking about. Boo was really sick two years ago and almost died, and we just had another scare - naturally, the day Bobby went to LA for a little trip. Boobear had to have emergency surgery on Friday, but he's back home and recovering. He has three weeks of medication and bed rest, and I've been a worried kitty mommy, watching him like a hawk. He chewed off the bandage around his pain medication sticker thing and now I'm afraid to go to sleep in case he ODs. No, really, this is what my mind goes to - a cat going on a pain med bender and passed out in a gutter. The vet assured me he will be fine and the dosage is really low at this point, since we're five days in, but of course I am neurotic and thinking of worst case scenarios.

I have barely slept in days. This is why I can't have kids! Do you see how I am with my animals? I'm a crazy lady. Boo looks at me the wrong way and I'm on the phone with the vet. I bet they love me.

Outfit Details:
pea coat, blouse, leather shorts, and bag - c/o Rugby Ralph Lauren
boots - Seychelles (old)
socks - HUE boot liners
tights - c/o HUE

Not too long ago, Rugby Ralph Lauren invited me to their downtown store to pick out an outfit, with the help of the best personal shopper ever, Chuck. It was by far one of my best shopping experiences for two reasons: one, very obviously, because I felt like Pretty Woman being able to try on everything in the store (only not a prostitute) and two, because Chuck was the most helpful and delightful person to work with. I asked him if he could always go shopping with me, since I'm horribly indecisive and he had my personal taste nailed.  It made the process so much easier. He said yes, but I wonder if he knew I wasn't kidding?

I also told the fine folks at Rugby that he should get a raise - all of the raises! I wonder if they knew I wasn't kidding?

real life

Rebecca Minkoff Dress - Confederacy (it was on sale at the shop; I can't find it online)
Rebecca Minkoff Swing shoulder bag with rosegold hardware - Confederacy

The other day, I had the pleasure of shooting some Arrojo hair tutorial videos for Joyus, along with my hair stylist, Tim Dueñas. There's nothing better than working with great people - it makes it feel a lot less like work and more like hanging out. Only, you have to say it a few times for the video camera, and try not to knock your glasses off while you're demonstrating how to style your bangs. Speaking of Tim, if you are in need of a great cut and live in/around NYC, book your appointment with Tim Dueñas at Arrojo and tell them to make a note that I sent you. He's giving 50% off to first time customers (in the month of February) if you mention that you found him through my blog. What a guy!

Afterward, I caught up with a couple of friends at lunch, then came back to hang out with Kim and Bobby. We went to Prospect Park, took some pictures and then I changed out of this dress because it was not very forgiving of the food baby I had from my mentioned lunch, nor was it long enough for the Spanx I own. From the afternoon on, it was an oversized sweater day. And that's real life, people.

If I look miserable in this photo, it's because I was on no sleep, probably at my 24 hour mark. I used to be able to stay up all night and function the next day - college, you know, partying and stuff (okay, I was studying or updating my livejournal) - but now I go into Zombie mode. Believe me, I don't want to stay up. Insomnia hit me pretty hard the past few nights. Last night was the first time I was able to 1) get to sleep and 2) actually stay asleep. I've been a little stressed and it affected my sleeping. It also gave me a sweet nosebleed, which made me wonder if I'm just traveling through time like Desmond.

Sickly and stressed no more, I'm off to Tea & Sympathy with Karen and Kim. No more time traveling for me!

makeup monday: la vie en rose

I like being pale but when Winter hits, it's a whole new level of pasty and dull. Gone is that porcelain skin (okay, "porcelain" might be a stretch), making way for its washed out alternate. The combination of cold weather and dry indoor heat is an unpleasant combination, drying out skin and giving it that ghastly appearance. It's important to exfoliate and moisturize to keep your skin hydrated and blotchiness at bay, but to give yourself a little extra glow and restore color to your cheeks via that magic little thing called makeup, read on.

As always, if you need product recommendations or have any questions, ask me on twitter or facebook. You can also ask in the comments, of course, but I can answer you directly on twitter and facebook!

Here's what I used:

Smashbox Photo Finish, Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturizer in Porcelain, Make Up For Ever Uplight in 22, Estee Lauder blush in Wild Sunset (I can't find it online - it might not be out yet), Urban Decay Good Karma Blush Brush, Urban Decay Super-Saturated High Gloss Lip Color in Lovechild. (Note: Estee Lauder Blush, Urban Decay brush and pencil are provided by the companies)

Urban Decay Primer Potion, Urban Decay 24/7 eye pencil in Bourbon, Urban Decay Good Karma Smudger Brush, Urban Decay Lush Lash Mascara. Not pictured: Urban Decay Lashes in Instaflare. (Primer and brush provided by Urban Decay)

For step by step instructions on how to get your glow back, keep reading after the jump.

Weekend Wear: These Boots

Outfit Details:
Tory Burch scarf - c/o Tory Burch
sweater - Free People
trench - Old Navy
Paige leather leggings - c/o Paige Premium Denim
Seychelles Stockholm boots - c/o Seychelles
K ring - gift from step-grandma
80s spinner ring - from my mom's shop, Hourglass Consignment
vintage Coach backpack - gift from my mom
lipstick - cannot remember but I was also wearing UD Stardust lip gloss in Andromeda over it.

I've been living in these boots, so expect to see them a few more times in the coming week. I can't help it - they're really comfortable. I think I got too used to driving around and only wearing heels at my destination, because now the thought of walking around the city in heels makes my feet cry. Not to say that I won't go back to it (with flats tucked away in my bag), but for right now, it's nice to have a reprieve.

Of course, at the moment I am sick and in bed (these photos are not from today) and the thought of putting shoes on at all makes me want to...go back to sleep. I'm not feeling up to anything other than socks or slippers, today!

In just a couple of weeks, I'll be back in Florida to throw a baby shower for my best friend, Lauren. Kim and I went to Tradewinds Park to scout a location for the outdoor gathering, and came across the perfect spot near lots of trees, a pond and a cute little bridge. I can't believe I'm at the age where my friends are starting to have babies and get married and, you know, be real deal adults. But furthermore, I cannot wait to meet little Connor. I bet he'll be good friends with my little nephew Ryder!

p.s. If you have any baby shower tips, please let me know!

I wish I had an excuse for that last photo but I can't remember if I was doing a really stupid looking pose or just tripping over my own foot. Maybe a little of both; they're equal hazards of being pigeon toed and wearing heels all the time.

I don't know if you remember, but there was a time when I barely ever wore accessories. I guess I go through stages, because for a very long time, I wore bracelets all the way up my arm. So high, in fact, that I held my arm out straight because I couldn't bend it. Of course, that was when I was a little kid. When high school came, I went to rainbows and studded belts and myriad pins all over my bags, then to the countless neckties I found at thrift stores - and not in the "cool" Avril way, in the "I'm going to dress like a man" kind of way. I had golf pants and corduroy. Lots of old man, plaid golf pants. I was going for Annie Hall but failed, miserably.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that when it comes to expressing myself, I'm a go big or go home type of gal. I'm rather laid back, until you push me over the edge and I blow up in your face, leaving you wondering, "What the heck just happened?" The same goes for accessorizing: I'm over accessorizing or wearing nothing at all. I used to have the same attitude toward makeup. No makeup or straight up drag queen. But I've come to love the in-between, in terms of getting out the door in a decent amount of time and still looking like a functioning human being. That doesn't mean I can actually function like a human being, but at least I can look like one.

Kidding. I'm really awesome at functioning.
