Ever since I was a little girl, horses have been a huge part of my life. We got our first horse, Spanky - a mischievous Anglo Arab who was smart as a whip, when I was just four years old. My beloved Morgan-Welsh pony Shawn, my absolute heart, was a Christmas surprise at five. Rowdy (whose registered name was "Let's Get Rowdy" - hence the belt) came shortly after: a massive Appendix with the most gentle disposition, you might mistake him for a teddy bear.

Our original three have since passed on, and I'm not sure I'll ever love another horse as much as I loved them. I now have Romeo, and my family has Diablo and Coco. Though I love them all fiercely, there is a special bond that develops between a horse and their little girl - something that has a lot to do with growing up beside one another - that solid adulthood can't replicate. There's a sign at the ranch where I board Romeo; it sums it up perfectly:

"All horses deserve, at least once in their lives, to be loved by a little girl."

But they were never our horses. We were their girls.

  1. this is even better than the one before, much love.

Awesome outfit, you look fabulous! The blouse and the lady tie look so cute. ♥
    Happy Weekend ☼

  5. This post brings me back to when I used to take riding lessons. Valentine, a horse I rode most often, always was there to great me with open arms as soon as I arrived and always gave me kisses. I've never had such a bond with a horse, ever!

I cried so hard on the day that he went back with his owners.

  6. Nothing wrong with being attracted to horses. They are some beautiful, majestic creatures. Great outfit! We'd appreciate cowgirl-style outfits like this down here in Texas. :) By the way (and I agree with Dianna here), this is very much a sweet post.

  18. That made me tear up! I took riding lessons as a girl and ALWAYS wanted a horse - I just loved my training horse and completely agree that it's a special kind of love. We were in Yosemite over the weekend on vacation and did a mountain ride with a local stable and to this day I get butterflies when I get on. :)

    Flapper Girl

  22. You look gorgeous! Though, the belt does remind me of what a lot of girls wore to school in the spring once the rodeo season was starting up (big buckles= you won, so it was a thing!). Pretty perfect for a horse lover then.... :)

  23. Oh goodness, I don't believe any little girl should grow up without a love of horses. I recall being little and my grandma's neighbor had horses that I was so enamored with. We'd go over and feed them apples and carrots and their owner would let me brush them. To this day, my dad regrets never getting me a horse. You're so lucky to have grown up around such amazing creatures!

  24. Stunning!

  25. I love that belt! Every June there is a Fete near Philadelphia where they have equine competitions and everyone lets you come up to the trailers and interact with their step daughter had three ponies absolutely in love with her as well as one gorgeous horse that was so white it looked like a unicorn without a horn...when I went this past June, I actually said to my fiance that Keiko would probably love this.

  26. Precious. There is nothing quite like a little girl and her horse.

  27. your outfits are so inspiring! :)

  28. I absolutely adore your belt! What a wonderful homage to your sweet horse :)

  33. Where did your sister get that "Get Rowdy" belt??? I need that!

  34. I love the way you create your outfits! keep it up ! huge fan x x

  35. Adorable outfit! Your story about the horses were sweet.

  36. I feel the same way! I got my first horse when I was nine, and bred her shortly after. The foal was the sweetest little girl ever--we were best friends! There's truly something magical about two little girls growing up together. She died about a year ago, but I can't ever forget those moments! That quote is so special and so true.

  37. Made me want to cry...I have never had a horse and have always been a bit timid around them, but I love them. They are majestic creatures.
