Makeup Monday: Urban Decay Naked Palette Tutorial

(click for full size)
Products we'll be using: Urban Decay Primer Potion, Urban Decay Naked palette, Urban Decay "Lush" 24/7 Velvet Glide On Pencil, MAC "Blacktrack" Fluidline,  Urban Decay Perversion Mascara (additional products in "Shop The Post" section at the bottom of the post - but FYI the lipstick is blotted Marc Jacobs Le Marc Le Creme "Kiss Kiss Bang Bang").

Even though Urban Decay still makes me think of brights, glitter and overall bold makeup, the Naked palettes are probably the most well known and loved products that they make. In the past, I made tutorials for my two most used Naked palettes (Naked 3 and Naked2 Basics), but realized I never made one with the original palette that started it all. Follow the step by step instructions for how to create this look, below!

1.  Apply primer potion.

2. Sweep "Naked" (shadow 1) in/above crease.

3. Line the crease and outer v with "Darkhorse" (shadow 2).

4. Soften the lines with "Smog" (shadow 3).

5. Pack "Half Baked" in the rest of the lid (shadow 4).

6. Darken the outer corners with "Creep" (shadow 5).

7. Blend, blend blend!

8. Line with "Lush" 24/7 Velvet Glide On Pencil.

9. Soften the liner with a sweep of "Smog" shadow (shadow 3).

10. Highlight the inners corners and browbone with "Sin" (shadow 6).

11. Line upper lashline with MAC Blacktrack Fluidline.

12. Finish with mascara.

Earth Hour

Outfit Details:
thrifted denim shirt
vintage bow tie
Trina Turk skirt (c/o)
Timex weekender watch (c/o)

On March 28th, 2015 at 8:30pm, I’m joining Timex in my pledge to shut off electronics (including my iphone) and swap lights for candlelight. Why? I’m participating in Earth Hour, a lights-off, worldwide movement with a mission to unite people in protecting the planet. For one person, it may seem like such a small task - and it is - but since its inception in 2007, the impact has been incredible (check out the outcome of 2014). But participation is just a small part - the real impact comes in spreading the awareness and getting others to participate, as well. Timex is donating $1 to the Earth Hour Movement for every #TimetoGLO pledge shared through social media (up to $50,000 total), so please make your pledge, here!

Festival Style

(Mural by Momo Show Palace)

Outfit Details:

Flora Borealis dress (c/o ModCloth - 15% off all dresses right now with code SPRINGITON)
Mint Cambridge Satchel Company bag (c/o ModCloth)
My Sunny Valentine heart sunglasses (c/o ModCloth)

Festival season is here, so it’s time for me to break out my flower crowns and flowy dresses, cut off shorts and vintage tees. JK that’s me all day, every day. So, it wasn’t a stretch when ModCloth asked me to put together a festival season inspired outfit; I’m a long-time, loyal ModCloth customer (I mean, where else am I going to get all of my novelty ice-cream purses and cat sweaters?!) and I’m all about that shapeless dress and heart sunglasses life. But if you're looking for a helping hand, ModCloth has an entire section of festival-ready clothing and accessories to give you some inspiration - or you can shop some of my favorites, below!

Makeup Monday: Think Bright Pink

Wearing: Too Faced Perfect Eyes Waterproof Eyeliner in "Perfect Black", Urban Decay 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencil in "Woodstock", Urban Decay Heavy Metal Glitter Liner in "Junkshow",  NARS "413 BLKR" BlushMelt Cosmetics lipstick in "Stupid Love" (see my foundation routine, here and brow routine, here).

Spring is officially here, and I'm breaking out the bright pinks! I was organizing my makeup stash, the other day (no easy feat) and realized that I have a lot of bright pink products. It's hard for me to narrow down the favorites - for instance, I have several favorite lips products within the same brands - but I managed to edit it down to fifteen various bright pink products in my makeup stash. I even threw in a gloss, because I've been slowly coming around to them...but mostly because I wanted to give at least a little bit of variation;) Here are some of my favorite bright pink makeup products of the moment:

1. Urban Decay 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencil in "Woodstock"
2. Make Up For Ever Aqua Liner in "9 Iridescent Fuchsia"
3. Urban Decay Eyeshadow in "Woodstock" (shimmer)
4. Sugarpill Cosmetics Eyeshadow in "Dollipop" (matte)
5. Urban Decay Heavy Metal Glitter Liner in "Junkshow"
6. NARS "413 BLKR" Blush
7. Smashbox Blush Rush in "Radiance"

1. NYX Cosmetics Matte Lipstick in "Shocking Pink" (creamy matte)
2. MAC Lipstick in "Candy Yum Yum" (matte, neon)
3. Melt Cosmetics lipstick in "Stupid Love" (matte, see above)
4. LAQA and Co Fat Lip Pencil in "Lambchop" (glossy, wind up)
5. NARS lipstick in "Schiap" (semi-matte)
6. Stila Stay All Day Vinyl Lip Gloss in "Hot Pink Vinyl" (thick, pigmented gloss)
7. Too Faced Melted Liquified Long Wear Lipstick in "Fuchsia" (long wearing, highly pigmented, glossy liquid lipstick)
8. Urban Decay Sheer Revolution Lipstick in "Sheer Anarchy" (sheer and shiny, also available in a more opaque formula)

Weekend Links

(photo from my instagram)

Happy weekend, everyone! It's Bobby's birthday (the big 3-0), so we've been celebrating the only way we know how: lots of good food and treats. I ordered a custom cake that was supposed to look like Vester, and it turned out to be a little bit of a fail - you might have seen it on my snapchat (keikolynngroves). FYI, I bought $2 worth of donuts to make a "breakfast cake" and it was better looking than the very pricey actual cake. So, the moral of the story is to always stack up some donuts and call it a day. Hooray! While we continue the birthday celebrations, check out some of the links I bookmarked, this week!

Makeup rules were made to be broken. Speaking of makeup, any tutorials you'd like to see? Product focused posts? Let me know!

- Hey, Bobby, can you make this cheese soufflé for me?

- I'm on the hunt for the flare leg jeans with a medium to high rise. I love my current pair (J Brand "Babe") but need a higher rise. Any suggestions?

This makes me feel old.

- I really want this wallpaper. And this one. But first, I need a house!

- We've been really good about sticking to our resolution of eating in, more - so I'm bookmarking this meatless meal plan for some new ideas, this week.

- I don't have children, but I can't help but notice how judgmental the internet world (and, well, the world) can be about the dos and don'ts parenting. Danielle's sweet and honest post about motherhood was a refreshing reminder to be kind and supportive. Heck, let's try that in every aspect of life - okay?

Spring Wish List

1 / 2 / 3 / 4 / 5 / 6 / 7 / 8

Happy first day of Spring, everyone! I am so excited to ditch Winter - even if it is lingering - and jump right into Spring. Here's a handful of items that have been on my wish list. I checked one off (that heart duffle is my current travel companion) and might have to make that plaid dress the next. What's on your wish list for Spring?

Monday Sentiments.

Fishs Eddy mug (thank you, Eliot!), rings by Kendra Scott, nail polish is LAQA & "Squid Ink".

I have a thing for novelty mugs (and mirrors). This one is perfect for those "don't talk to me until I've had my coffee" mornings. Which is every morning, because I'm not a morning person.

Weekend Link Roundup

(photo from my instagram)

Oh, boy...I've had quite a week. It seems like every [minor] ailment that could possibly affect me hit me at once, making it one big mess. If I go to the doctor on my own accord, you know I'm not feeling well. I'm feeling much better, other than a very upset stomach, and I'm looking forward to starting a new week. I hope your week was healthier than mine! Here's what I've been clicking on, in between naps and work and more naps and medicine:

Emoji Easter Eggs!

This papier-mâché heart makes me want to get crafty.

- I'm in love with this versatile dress (40% everything with code EXTRA40)

- My friend Christine, a personal stylist, started a YouTube channel! Check out her latest video: how to style one J.Crew dress five different ways.

- I just bought these peach heart sunglasses - I couldn't resist.

- Instagrammer to follow: aww.sam

- This hat is perfect (and my sentiments, exactly).

- Wouldn't these make the cutest reusable gift bags?

Almost Spring

Outfit Details:
WHiT striped dress (c/o)
thrifted denim overalls jumper
Coach Rivets Flap Dakotah bag (c/o)
Boda leather jacket (c/o)
Minna Parikka "Caracal" flats
Triple Graces "Maddi" sunglasses
ModCloth "Know A Trick Or Two" tights
Kendra Scott rings mixed with Forever 21 bow rings
Studebaker Metals Kitty Cuff
Melt Cosmetics "Stupid Love" lipstick

Kim took these photos on my last day in Los Angeles, and I remember dreading coming back to a real Winter. Of course, now I'm kind of glad that I waited to post these, because Spring is peeking through! Bobby and I have even decided it's time to pack up most of our Winter gear, and bring out the lightweight layers - like this leather jacket, which I wore the second the temperature went above 50. Don't get me wrong, I love my winter coats (they take up a lot of my closet) but I'm looking forward to giving them a much deserved break. Happy almost Spring, everyone!

Choosing The Right Red Lipstick For You

(Click for full size) Left to right: Marc Jacobs Le Marc Lip Creme in Blow, Core Cora, Goddess, Je T'aime, Miss Scarlet, Oh Miley, and Rei of Light, $30 each.

Before I start this post, I'd like to mention that this is not sponsored (and I will always let you know if it is). However, when Marc Jacobs Beauty sent me seven of their Le Marc Lip Cremes in varying shades of red, complete with a guide on how to choose the right red for you, I figured it would make a great comparison post. No, I'm not going to tell you how to choose the perfect red. Why? Because I come from the "wear what you want" school of thought, and don't believe that rules apply to makeup. Sure, there are helpful guidelines, tips and tricks to follow - but in the end, it's all about what makes you feel confident and happy. My best advice is to try them all on and decide for yourself - and make sure you're buying from a source with a great return policy, just in case it doesn't work out.

(The Marc Jacobs Beauty guide to red lipsticks)

You can read ten different guides on how to choose the right lipstick for you, what goes with what skin tone (why is it so hard to find your undertones? I still get confused), what colors to avoid. They'll all say something different. And that's okay, because it's all a matter of opinion; I don't think any of them are wrong. I just don't think they should be viewed as absolute, because half of the fun is experimenting. And guess what? Some of my favorite shades weren't on my spectrum. I tried all seven lipsticks, yesterday. Check them all out, below and let me know your favorites!

First up is Blow, a dark berry shade. I really like the formula of these lipsticks; they're smooth and easy to apply, highly pigmented, and long lasting (though I am admittedly going by the only one I've worn all day, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang). However, Blow takes a lot of precision (as most dark lipsticks do), and of all of them, it was the only one that was a little streaky when I first applied. Nothing too noticeable, but worth pointing out that it took a little extra care to get it just right.

I usually stay away from corals, so I was pleasantly surprised that Core Cora stood out as one of my favorites. I love that it's not too bright, because electric corals can make me look a little wan.

Goddess is described as a "deep maraschino" - I would describe this as a very classic, true red.

Je T'aime is another standout favorite, even though I think of it as more of a rose hue. It's described as "rum raspberry" and will probably read as more of a berry on those with more pigmented lips.

Miss Scarlet, "deep ruby" / brick red. This is great if you're looking for something in between the bright and the vampy reds.

Oh Miley is very similar to Goddess, but is slightly cooler and lighter. "Strawberry" is the best way to describe this. Both shades are worth checking out, if you're looking for a long lasting, vibrant red.

Rei of Light, a brownish brick red. With its demi-matte finish, it reminds me of an updated 90s it-girl shade (which I'm clearly into).

What shades are your favorite?

Weekend Link Roundup

(photo from my instagram)

- If you're a vintage lover (or seller), check out the new vintage marketplace app, Whurl. You can post items you're looking to buy, and sellers will come to you. Brilliant!

- Eight year old Gabi feeds the crows and receives gifts from them, in return.

- Stunning photos of the interiors of abandoned homes.

- Is 10 pm the perfect bedtime? FYI, it's 5:27 AM and I'm still awake. dhfjkhkfdfadjksjksa

- Uncle Jesse was in front of the Full House house, and these visitors didn't. even. notice. I bet they're kicking themselves, now!

- Vivetta presale - swoon.

- This leopard coat is perfect (and on sale).

- I was just browsing through old posts and realized that I lost these sunglasses (my favorites)! I'm going to be tearing apart my room, now. Also, remember when I had long hair? Whoa.

The grass is always greener

Outfit Details:
Boda Skins quilted biker jacket (c/o)
Free People "Summer Winds" gauzy dress
Minna Parikka "Caracal" loafers
Coach Rivets Flap Dakotah Crossbody (c/o)
Levis beanie
Kendra Scott rings (c/o)
Karen Walker "Anytime" sunglasses

Even though it was cooler than usual in LA, it was just warm enough to go bare legged. That could be considered a positive or a negative, considering the current state of my legs: pasty white with a sickly purple hue. Not that it gets much better any other time of year; I'm known to hide from the sun on any given day. But I promise you, the second this snow melts and the weather warms up, I'm going to bask in its glory. And then I'm probably going to complain about how hot it is, just a month later. The grass is always greener.
